Northern Saw-whet Owl Art Print

from $24.00

The Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is one of North America’s smallest owls, with a round head, oversized yellow eyes, and a reddish-brown body marked with white streaks. Despite their small size, these elusive hunters are skilled at catching prey in the darkness of the forest.

Diet: Primarily mice and other small mammals, including voles and shrews. They occasionally eat small birds and insects.

Habitat: Coniferous and mixed forests, where they roost in dense evergreen foliage during the day and nest in tree cavities, often old woodpecker holes.

Range: Across much of North America, from southern Canada into parts of the United States and Mexico. Many migrate south in autumn, while others remain in the same area year-round.

Northern Saw-whet Owls are mostly active at night and can be remarkably difficult to spot during the day. Their name comes from a distinctive call that was thought to resemble the sound of a saw being sharpened. During autumn migration, these tiny owls travel through forests under the cover of darkness, often passing unnoticed by the people living nearby.
