Nothing now remains of Celestia Atzell aside from a crumbling tombstone deep in the woodlands of Vinton County, Ohio. A beautiful resting place to be sure, but the epitaph on her stone tells the story of a life marked by sorrow:

Her life was full of sadness - Till in a midnight hour - She was called to a home In the mount of God - To weep alone no more.
Though history has left few clues to her life, records reveal that Celestia spent time as a patient at the Athens Lunatic Asylum before her death at just 31 years old. Inspired by her story, this illustration uses details from her life and the surrounding hills she called home.
This piece is the third illustration in my ongoing series honoring the Lives of patients connected to the Athens Lunatic Asylum, using art to remember those whose stories might otherwise be forgotten.
