Black Witch Moth Art Print
The Black Witch Moth (Ascalapha odorata) is a large, dark-colored moth with long, pointed wings patterned in shades of brown, charcoal, and subtle iridescent tones. Its impressive size and bat-like silhouette make it an unforgettable sight when encountered resting on a wall or flying at dusk.
Diet: Adult moths feed on overripe fruit and tree sap. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of plants such as acacia, mesquite, and other legumes.
Habitat: Tropical forests, woodlands, and other areas with suitable host plants. Adults may also turn up around buildings and outdoor lights.
Range: Tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from South America through Central America and Mexico. Some individuals migrate north into the United States and occasionally as far as Canada.
The Black Witch Moth has inspired folklore throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, where it is sometimes associated with death or bad luck. Despite these eerie legends, it is simply a remarkable moth whose seasonal movements can carry it far beyond its usual tropical range.
