Cecropia Moth Art Print
The Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia) is one of North America’s largest native moth species, with a wingspan that can reach nearly six inches. Its striking reddish-brown wings feature pale bands and distinctive crescent-shaped spots, making it one of the most recognizable members of the giant silk moth family.
Diet: Adult Cecropia Moths do not eat. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of trees and shrubs, including maple, cherry, birch, and willow. I personally have a had the most luck raising caterpillars on Wild Black Cherry.
Habitat: Woodlands, forest edges, and other areas with suitable host trees.
Range: Eastern North America, extending west to the Rocky Mountains and north into Canada.
Despite their impressive size, adult Cecropia Moths live only briefly, relying on energy stored during their caterpillar stage. They emerge from their cocoons in late spring and early summer, with their short adult lives devoted to finding a mate and producing the next generation.
