Eastern Box Turtle and Pawpaw Art Print
The Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a terrestrial turtle known for its beautifully patterned, domed shell, often marked with bright orange or yellow designs against a dark background. Unlike most turtles, it has a hinged lower shell that allows it to close up tightly inside its shell for protection.
Diet: Omnivorous, eating earthworms, slugs, insects, mushrooms, berries, fruits (including Pawpaw), flowers, and other plant and animal matter.
Habitat: Moist woodlands, forest edges, meadows, and areas with plenty of leaf litter and shelter. They often stay near familiar home ranges throughout their lives.
Range: The eastern United States, from the Great Lakes region south toward the Gulf Coast, and from the Atlantic coast west into parts of the Mississippi Valley.
Eastern Box Turtles can live for many decades, sometimes exceeding 50 years. They grow slowly, take years to reach maturity, and often return to the same areas season after season. Because they move slowly and are vulnerable to habitat loss and road traffic, protecting the places they call home is especially important to their survival. They should never be kept as pets.
