The Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) is a small, stocky owl with bright yellow eyes, feathered ear tufts, and intricately patterned plumage. It comes in two main color forms: gray and reddish-brown. Both provide excellent camouflage against tree bark, helping these elusive owls disappear into their surroundings.
Diet: Mice, voles, small birds, insects, earthworms, frogs, and other small animals.
Habitat: Woodlands, forest edges, orchards, parks, and suburban neighborhoods with trees and suitable nesting cavities.
Range: Eastern North America, primarily east of the Rocky Mountains, where it lives year-round.
Despite their name, Eastern Screech-Owls don’t actually screech. Their calls include a haunting, descending whinny and a steady, high-pitched trill. They nest in natural tree cavities and abandoned woodpecker holes, and readily use nest boxes when suitable trees are scarce.
