Golden-crowned Kinglet Art Print

from $24.00

Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa)

Description: The Golden-crowned Kinglet is one of North America’s smallest songbirds. It has olive-green upperparts, pale underparts, and a black-and-white striped face topped with a bright yellow crown. Males also have an orange patch within the crown.

Diet: Golden-crowned Kinglets feed mainly on tiny insects, spiders, and their eggs, gleaning them from tree bark and clusters of evergreen needles. In winter, they occasionally eat seeds.

Range & Habitat: These birds breed in northern and mountainous forests across North America and spend winters throughout much of the United States. They favor coniferous forests, especially spruce and fir, but also use deciduous woodlands and parks outside the breeding season.

Interesting Fact: Despite weighing only a few grams, Golden-crowned Kinglets can survive winter nights as cold as –40°F. Their tiny bodies lose heat quickly, so they rely on dense feathers, sheltered roosting spots, and sometimes huddling together to stay warm.
