The Juniper Hairstreak (Callophrys gryneus) is a tiny butterfly with bright green undersides marked by thin white lines edged in rusty brown. Its subtle colors help it blend in with the foliage of junipers and cedars.
Habitat: Found in open woodlands, old fields, woodland edges, and rocky areas where junipers or other suitable conifers grow.
Range: Found across much of the United States, extending into southern Canada and parts of northern Mexico.
Diet: Caterpillars feed on juniper and cedar foliage, while adult butterflies sip nectar from flowers such.
Interesting Fact: Despite being a butterfly, the Juniper Hairstreak's caterpillars feed on conifers, including eastern red cedar, rather than the broadleaf plants used by many other hairstreak butterflies.
