The Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) is a small, brown-furred bat found across much of North America. An agile nighttime hunter, it uses echolocation to locate insects, often feeding over streams, ponds, and other places where insects gather.
Diet: Mosquitoes, midges, moths, beetles, and other small insects.
Habitat: Woodlands, areas near water, and places with suitable roosts. During warmer months, it may roost in tree cavities, beneath loose bark, or in buildings and bat houses. In winter, it hibernates in caves and mines.
Range: Much of the United States and Canada, extending into parts of Mexico.
Little Brown Bats play an important role in ecosystems by consuming large numbers of insects. However, their populations have suffered severe declines in many areas due to white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that affects hibernating bats.
