The Luna Moth (Actias luna) is a striking, pale green moth known for its long, graceful hindwing tails and transparent eyespots. Despite its large wings and vibrant color, it can be surprisingly difficult to spot resting among leaves in the forest canopy.
Diet: Adult Luna Moths do not eat. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of trees such as hickory, walnut, birch, sweetgum, and persimmon.
Habitat: Deciduous forests and wooded areas where their caterpillar host plants grow.
Range: Eastern North America, from parts of Canada south through the eastern United States.
Luna Moths live only about a week as adults. Without functioning mouthparts for feeding, their brief adult lives are devoted to finding a mate and reproducing. Their caterpillars eventually spin silken cocoons among fallen leaves, where they spend the winter before emerging as moths in the warmer months.
Product Details: This listing is for a print of my original work. Printed on high quality watercolor paper with archival ink. Watermark will not appear on your print. Each print is hand signed, giving it a unique touch.
