The Malachite Butterfly (Siproeta stelenes) is a large, eye-catching butterfly with dark brown to black wings patterned with translucent, bright green patches. Its coloring resembles the green mineral malachite, which inspired its name.
Habitat: Found in subtropical forests, forest edges, shaded stream corridors, thickets, and tropical fruit orchards.
Range: Native to Central America, northern South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with populations in southern Florida and occasional appearances in southern Texas.
Diet: Caterpillars feed on plants in the acanthus family, including wild petunias and green shrimp plants. Adults feed mainly on rotting fruit, but also visit flowers for nectar and other food sources.
Interesting Fact: Malachite Butterflies can feed on rotting fruit and other food sources throughout the day. They’re also strong fliers and have been observed visiting flowers high in the forest canopy, sometimes more than 30 feet above the ground.
