The Mexican Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is a remarkably fast flyer with long, narrow wings and a tail that extends beyond its tail membrane. These agile bats can reach incredible speeds while hunting insects high above the ground.
Diet: Primarily moths, along with beetles, flies, and other flying insects.
Habitat: Caves, abandoned mines, bridges, tunnels, and other sheltered roosting sites. They often form enormous colonies, sometimes numbering in the millions.
Range: From the southern United States through Mexico and Central America, extending into parts of South America.
Many Mexican Free-tailed Bats migrate seasonally, traveling south to warmer regions as the weather cools. At dusk, huge colonies can pour out of their roosts in swirling streams, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife displays in North America.
