Red-breasted Nuthatch Art Print

from $20.00

The Red-breasted Nuthatch is a small, energetic songbird with a blue-gray back, rusty-orange underside, and distinctive black-and-white facial stripes. Unlike most birds, nuthatches regularly travel headfirst down tree trunks as they search for insects and spiders hidden in the bark.

Habitat: Found in coniferous and mixed forests, especially those with pine, spruce, and fir trees. They also visit parks, gardens, and backyard bird feeders.

Diet: Eats insects and spiders during warmer months, along with seeds and nuts throughout the year. Nuthatches often wedge seeds into bark crevices and hammer them open with their strong bills.

Range: Found across much of Canada, Alaska, and the northern and western United States, with some populations moving south during winter in search of food.

Interesting fact: Red-breasted Nuthatches have a distinctive nasal call that sounds a bit like a tiny toy horn. They also spread sticky conifer resin around their nest entrances, which may help deter predators.
