The Red Rim (Biblis hyperia) is a striking butterfly with dark brown to nearly black wings edged with a vivid red band along the hindwings.
Habitat: Found in open subtropical forests, forest edges, and clearings throughout tropical regions.
Range: Native to Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Mexico, with occasional appearances in southern Texas. I’ve seen one in the Rio Grande Valley at the National Butterfly Center- so cool!
Diet: Caterpillars feed on noseburn (Tragia volubilis), a plant in the spurge family, while adults feed primarily on rotting fruit and other non-floral food sources.
Interesting Fact: Unlike many butterflies that visit flowers for nectar, adult Red Rims are attracted to fermenting fruit, which provides them with sugars and nutrients. The one I observed was attracted to a the “butterfly brew,” a rotting mixture that employees at the National Butterfly Center made and put out to attract butterflies.
Add a touch of natural beauty to your laptop, water bottle, phone case, car, or any other surface with this waterproof sticker. Featuring a life-size Red Rim Butterfly on a white background, this irregularly-shaped, matte laminated sticker is suited for both indoor and outdoor use.
