The Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus) is a slender, bright green snake with a pale yellow or whitish belly. An excellent climber, it spends much of its time weaving through leafy branches and vines, where its vibrant coloring helps it blend almost seamlessly into the vegetation.
Diet: Spiders, caterpillars, grasshoppers, crickets, and other insects.
Habitat: Trees, shrubs, and dense vegetation, especially along forest edges, streams, ponds, and wetlands.
Range: Southeastern and eastern North America, extending from the southern Atlantic coast west into Texas and parts of Mexico.
Unlike many snakes that hunt primarily on the ground, Rough Green Snakes are active during the day and forage among foliage for small invertebrates. When threatened, they often rely on camouflage and remain still or quickly disappear into the surrounding greenery.
