Hickory Horned Devil / Royal Walnut Moth (Citheronia regalis) is a large, striking moth with gray, orange, and yellow markings. Its caterpillar, known as the Hickory Horned Devil, has a blue-green body and prominent curved horns, but is completely harmless.
Diet: Caterpillars feed on the leaves of trees such as hickory, walnut, sweetgum, and persimmon. Adult moths do not feed.
Range & Habitat: Native to the eastern United States, Regal Moths inhabit deciduous forests and wooded areas where their host trees grow. They are more common in the southern part of their range.
Interesting Fact: The Hickory Horned Devil is one of North America’s largest caterpillars, growing to nearly six inches long. When fully grown, it burrows underground to pupate and spends the winter there before emerging as a Regal Moth (also known as Royal Walnut Moth) the following summer.
