Sandhill Crane Art Print
The Sandhill crane (Antigone canadensis) is a tall, elegant bird with long legs, a long neck, and gray plumage often tinged with rusty brown. Adults have a distinctive patch of red skin on the crown of their head and typically stand 3–4 feet tall, with a wingspan reaching about 6½ feet.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on seeds, grains, berries, roots, insects, earthworms, snails, frogs, reptiles, and small mammals. They forage by probing the ground and shallow wetlands with their long bills.
Range: North America, with some populations living year-round in the southeastern United States and Cuba, while others migrate between northern breeding grounds and wintering areas in the southern United States and northern Mexico.
Habitat: Marshes, bogs, wet meadows, grasslands, prairies, and agricultural fields. They often nest in shallow wetlands and gather in open fields and river valleys during migration.
Interesting Fact: Sandhill cranes are famous for their elaborate courtship dances, which include bowing, leaping into the air, and spreading their wings. Their incredibly loud, rolling calls are made possible by an unusually long windpipe that coils inside the breastbone, creating a deep, resonant sound that can carry for miles. Some pairs remain together for decades, often staying with their young for up to 10 months after hatching.
