The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a distinctive owl with mottled brown and buff feathers, bright yellow eyes, and tiny ear tufts that are rarely visible. Unlike many owls that hunt under the cover of darkness, Short-eared Owls are often active during daylight, especially around dawn and dusk.
Diet: Primarily voles and mice, along with other small mammals and occasionally small birds.
Habitat: Open grasslands, meadows, marshes, prairies, and other wide-open landscapes with low vegetation.
Range: Found across much of North America and on several other continents. Many populations migrate seasonally or move in response to food availability.
Short-eared Owls are fascinating to watch in flight. They sweep low over open fields with slow wingbeats, sometimes resembling a large moth as they search for prey. Unlike most owls, they nest directly on the ground, hiding their nests among grasses and other low vegetation.
