Snow Trillium (Trillium nivale) is one of our earliest native wildflowers, sometimes blooming as early as late February while snow is still on the ground. This small woodland perennial grows in rocky, limestone-rich habitats, often near outcrops and shaded ledges. Its delicate white petals and three blue-green leaves emerge close to the ground, making it easy to overlook among the leaf litter.
Like other trilliums, Snow Trillium is slow-growing and long-lived. Its seeds are dispersed by ants, which carry them away to feed on a nutritious structure attached to each seed. Here in Ohio, this uncommon wildflower has a limited distribution, making the protection of its woodland habitat especially important.
