The Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) is an amphibian with a dark body covered in yellow spots. These secretive salamanders spend most of the year hidden underground or beneath logs and leaf litter in deciduous forests.
Diet: Earthworms, slugs, snails, insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
Habitat: Moist woodlands near seasonal ponds and vernal pools, where they gather to breed in early spring.
Range: Eastern North America, from southern Canada through much of the eastern United States.
Personal note: Seeing the mass migration of Spotted Salamanders in the wild as a teenager was what first inspired me to become a naturalist. On warm, rainy nights in early spring, these usually hidden amphibians emerge from the forest and make their way together to breeding ponds.
